For most of our lives we will flit from thinking we know everything to thinking we know nothing.

Whenever you meet someone that has an appreciation for the same music, literature, art or cars, or whatever.

I once got into a conversation with a friend about The Beatles, favourite album, song, etc…

An enjoyable conversation became more challenging as we traded knowledge for knowledge until I had to tap out when he told me that he had 3 vinyl versions of Abbey Road, each with different recording numbers , all pressed on different weight of vinyl at different times and maybe even at different factories.

The trouble with sales people is that they sometimes don’t know when to tap out.

Either that or they tap out too soon.

The Dunning Kruger effect is a bias based on the idea that people (sales people) know very little about their work (process, knowledge, buying cycles, customers etc), they tend to over estimate their abilities and competencies.

There are also those who don’t fully appreciate what they know because they recognise that there is already and will always be so much more for them to learn.

Us humans have many unconscious beliefs that only come to light later in life or when we decided to dive deep into the conscious – not many of us want to nor know how to.

Sales is not just a business critical role and how we feel about our competencies, actual or otherwise, is hugely important for growth or survival.

As a sales coach and sales mentor, I encounter the full spectrum of perspectives and ultimately most people just don’t know nor have the awareness to uncover effectively that which is holding them back.

Most times it is hard to hold the mirror up.

Perfection is as hard to find as abject failure – I don’t think either states are real but I am not the one that needs convinced.
